{"id":669,"date":"2019-07-09T16:59:21","date_gmt":"2019-07-09T14:59:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.labex-palm.fr\/?page_id=669"},"modified":"2020-03-16T17:15:29","modified_gmt":"2020-03-16T16:15:29","slug":"outreach","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.labex-palm.fr\/en\/outreach\/","title":{"rendered":"Outreach"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">An intervention at Radio France: Electronics at the speed of light<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In a study published in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41567-019-0745-8\">Nature Physics<\/a><\/em>: physicists have just demonstrated a new approach to controlling electrons with light. A European team, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41567-019-0745-8\">researchers from Paris-Saclay<\/a>, has induced electrons to move on a time scale of less than a femtosecond, i.e. less than a quadrillionth of a second. At present, our electronic components &#8211; based on silicon semiconductors &#8211; are activated in picoseconds &#8211; thousands of billions of seconds &#8211; a thousand times slower than a femtosecond. For years we have been trying to conduct electricity as quickly as possible. To achieve this, researchers have used laser pulses in particular: the idea is to use the ultra-fast light pulse to control the properties of the electrons. This is fundamental research &#8211; at the heart of one of the priority themes of the PALM lab &#8211; and it will take time to be able to apply these results. However, in the long term, this could push back the current limits of computer systems. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<u><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.franceculture.fr\/emissions\/le-journal-des-sciences\/le-journal-des-sciences-du-vendredi-27-decembre-2019\">Interview with <strong>Marino Marsi<\/strong>, physicist at the Solids Physics Laboratory at the University of Paris Saclay, responsible for the Ultrafast theme.
